Since his debut album was released 4 years ago, Hozier has been keeping quiet. But that doesn't mean he's been idle. And today, he decided to show us exactly what he's been working on, releasing a 4 song EP ahead of his promised upcoming album. The new music shows a smokier and subtler side of Hozier, as he sings more softly than we've heard before.
In fact, the only time we really hear him let loose is in the EP's title track, "Nina Cried Power." The song, which Hozier describes as a "song about protest songs," was inspired by Nina Simone and others who tried to change the world through music. As a whole, his new work sounds more politically focused and pessimistic, but who doesn't have things weighing on their mind these days?
Although we've quickly fallen in love with his dark new sound, all it really does is leave us wanting more. So we'll anxiously be awaiting the release of his LP. Hopefully we won't be waiting another 4 years.
