It's not every day that I get to make a reference to Rod Stewart's old band, Faces, but Foxygen drummer Shaun Fleming isn't your typical musician and he's striking some classic rock notes that haven't yet been exhausted by our contemporary classic rock revival. For his new Diane Coffee solo project, Fleming just released the infectiously fun video for "Mayflower" which parodies late night infomercials, but that's not what I'm thinking about as I write this. I'm thinking about Fleming's voice on the track which sounds so much like a mix between young Rod Stewart and young Mick Jagger that it's freaking me out a bit. The second the track ended, I started spontaneously humming Faces "Ooh La La." I never really jumped aboard the Foxygen hype train but as someone that's a huge fan of Rod, the Stones, and Spoon (and there are hints of "The Underdog" in this track's use of the trumpet), I think I'm ready to buy my ticket for the Diane Coffee express.
