I was listening to "Metro" by Berlin on my way to work this morning. "Take My Breath Away" was their big hit, but "Metro" was more indicative of their sound, and it's a perfect encapsulation of a specific subgenre of 80s New Wave: icy, sophisticated cool. And on their new single/video, "In Reverse," synthpoppers Mackintosh Braun
have that elegant, atmospheric 80s sense of cool on lock.
We're premiering the video for "In Reverse" today and the track positions the sort of ice cold synths that make you think you've dived into a Scandinavian lake with the modern context of gorgeously understated vocals and evocative lyrical imagery. And though the neon-drenched video pays homage to its 80s roots, it richly uses those inspirations to create a rich visual atmosphere to keep anyone happy who had no idea what I was talking about when I was riffing on Berlin earlier.
