In literature, the term "pathetic fallacy" means the attribution of human feelings and responses to inanimate things or animals, but it's most commonly used to describe when the weather matches your mood. Like when it's raining and you're feeling just as gloomy as the day, or when the sun is shining and you're ecstatic. Now, I don't know about you, but when I'm sad I like to wallow in self-pity and listen to only sad songs. Here are 10 songs to listen to when you want to match your feelings and your playlists with the weather.
1. Rainy Days and Mondays - The Carpenters
If the title of the song doesn't tell you what this song is about, maybe these lyrics from the last verse will "Nothing to do but frown / Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down." This is the perfect song to listen to on a rainy Monday morning when you can't seem to bring yourself to get out of bed for work or school, and you just want to pull the covers up over your head and go back to sleep.
2. Winter Winds - Mumford and Sons
You know that awkward period of time when you're ready for winter, but not quite ready for Christmas? Or even worse, December 26th. When you still want to listen to songs about winter, but Santa Claus has already come to town and gone back up to the North Pole? This song is perfect for those times.
3. Walking On Sunshine - Katrina & The Waves
This is another one that probably doesn't need to be explained. "I'm walking on sunshine / And don't it feel good!" All about having fun in the sun.
4. Singing In The Rain - Gene Kelly
Sometimes, getting caught in the rain isn't such a bad thing. Every girl dreams of getting kissed in the rain because of movies like A Cinderella Story
, but they never think of the practicality of it. Standing in the rain soaking wet and cold isn't all that ideal. Regardless, this is a song that shows just how happy the rain can make you.
5. When It Rains - Paramore
This is an old school Paramore song, from back when they were a pop-punk band, and not just a pop band. The angsty vibe of "When It Rains" is ideal for those days when it's thundering and you're cooped up inside.
6. Here Comes the Sun - The Beatles
Again, you probably don't need an explanation for this classic Beatles song. Pop this on that first day in early spring where it's barely 60 degrees, but you can't help but break out your sundresses and your shades.
7. Valley Winter Song - Fountains of Wayne
Play this Fountains of Wayne song when winter seems like it's been going on forever and all you can think about is the warm, summer sun.
8. Sun Is Shining - Bob Marley and The Wailers
The opening lines of this song are "Sun is shining, the weather is sweet / Make you want to move your dancing feet." Bob Marley was born and raised in sunny Jamaica, but it almost seems like he wrote this song about the beginning of spring, when the snow is starting to melt and all you can feel is just pure happiness.
9. White Winter Hymnal - Fleet Foxes
A song about a kid playing in the snow, but without Frosty or Rudolph. The harmonies in this song give it the vibe of a Christmas carol, but without the mention of a manger or Wise Men. Add this to your "After December 25th" playlist.
10. Summer Nights - Olivia Newton John and John Travolta
Everyone knows this scene from the classic musical, Grease
. And you know exactly what it's about: summer love and the joy of summer break. Play this song when you're thinking about your summer fling, or the one you wish you had.
