metric is the new benchmark...

...for success, that is. Label-less band Metric scored big with their latest, lauded record Fantasies, as well as popular first single "Help I'm Alive." Now the single has cracked the top twenty of alternative radio, meaning Metric has a self-released album with a noticable prescense on mainstream radio, which to college radio stations stuck in 1992, could be earth shattering news. To the rest of us, it is a sign.

Metric is joining the likes of Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, and Pearl Jam, all acts that have seen large-scale success without the support of a traditional label. Now, these guys are not your typical 'indie' bands; quite the opposite, they are all household names who've at one point or another been on a major label. But Metric is different, and is definitely another domino in the rapidly increasing trend of self-release, a move that seems to be empowering artists to take control of their careers and their music.

The band's promotion included direct-to-fan efforts; extensive online, radio, retail, video, tour, and synch licensing initiatives. Their "small, but global" operation was coordinated by their two managers out of their home in Montreal. To be fair, Metric was released on a label in Canada, but most will agree that mainstream attention in the US, when accomplished without the help of a traditional label, is an indication of something extraordinary. Fantasies was self-released world-wide, a feat that usually requires a significant amount of connections and clout.

Indie is the new mainstream? Maybe the New Moon soundtrack can shed some light on this question.-joe puglisi
