Kat Cunning (full name: Katrina Cunningham) -- singer, songwriter, actress, dancer -- has dropped a new single. "Baby" is a slow, melancholy song about being alone with oneself. It's no surprise, as a singer that has appeared on and off a Broadway stage, that Cunning brings an incredible vocal range to the table. What's doubly impressive is the poetic use of ambient sound and soft piano in "Baby". Cunning isn't just a great singer -- she's skilled at using instruments (and lack of instruments) to create atmosphere in her music. The lyrics of "Baby" hint at trouble with alcohol and loneliness, and the desire to be called someone's baby. She sings "Rock me slow in your arms like a little baby / ‘Cause I can't handle being by myself on a crowded train." Mixed with Cunning's sultry voice, it's on brand with the pin-girl image brand Cunning seems to craft on her social media accounts.
Kat Cunning recently performed at Refinery29's celebrity-curated 29Rooms exhibit, and word is she's working on her first album now, so we'll have more Kat to look forward to soon.
