In the interminable quest for cool musical happenings around New York City, it's easy to get lost in the venue shuffle. The house party concert is a mere memory for most, an aesthetic as far gone as beer pong and frat keggers. But savvy New Yorkers know that these things exist, in certain places, you've just got to look a little harder. But the boozing is easy -- it's the cultural experiences that are the trick. How do you finagle your way into a private concert, set in an intimate apartment space, if your friends just want to get trashed and go to Terminal 5? There's a better way, and last night, we discovered it.

Sofar -- which, non-obviously, stands for Songs From A Room -- is a series of secret concert events held in apartments in cities around the world. Over a hundred of these events have happened in cities like London, San Francisco, Dallas, Sydney, Manchester, Buenos Aires, and of course, New York City. Sofar films many of the events, as well as snapping photos and posting to their site. Some really wild talent has been captured. Here's one from Minneapolis:

Although we're sure copycat events exist, we've never seen a grassroots private concert series with this much scale. The infrastructure is what makes it unique.

Thanks to a tip from our friend Jodie Belman, we stumbled on to one last night in Park Slope, featuring the bouncy strings of the Miracles of Modern Science. Awesome set, awesome vibe. The videos from last night haven't surfaced yet, but here's a taste of MoMS via their video for "Eating Me Alive":
