Back in August, I got to chat with singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, K. Ishibashi (aka Kishi Bashi) all about his upcoming third studio album Sonderlust. Of course, theres no such word as "sonderlust" in the dictionary, so K used John Koenig's Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows for inspiration for a title for his record. "Sonderlust" is a spin off of a word "sonder", which is "the realization that a stranger might have just as complex and rich of a life as you." It's the understanding of a bigger universe with interconnected things. Well, today Kishi Bashi has released Sonderlust and its his most vulnerable and experimental album to date.

The beginning of "Say Yeah" reminds me a lot of a video game but then it leads into dreamy strings, reminiscent of the film, The Labyrinth. Its a plea for the reconciliation of a relationship as well as an acknowledgement that relationships are easily lost. The song is full of ear-piercing synths and dreamy vocals from K - almost hypnotizing you to do whatever he says. "Hey Big Star" is one of my favorite tracks on the record because it almost makes me want to run a marathon throughout New York City and have a big, cheesy smile across my face while I'm at it. "Hey big star, you shine too bright / Im in love with you / Im your comet tonight." I mean, come on.

"Statues in a Gallery" is another triumphant track because the energy at the beginning of the track gets you goin'. It combines a guitar, and violin with genres you would never imagine together. The album ends with the peaceful sounds of "Honeybody, where the violin takes center stage at the beginning. All of a sudden, the song takes a turn to showcase bongo drums and other strings - almost reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel's "Cecilia" - putting a perfect cap to Kishi Bashi's third album, Sonderlust.

Kishi Bashi is one of the most talented and experimental artists out right now and Sonderlust proves it. K. will start his fall tour on September 27th in his hometown of Athens, Georgia. Be sure to check if he's coming to a city near you - Kishi Bashi is one hell of a live performer. Find the tour dates and make sure to watch our Baeble session with Kishi Bashi below!
