It’s quite a feat when an artist manages to become a genre unto themselves. Yet over the course of 16 years, and an even more impressive 19 albums, punky folkateer Ani Difranco has managed to do just that…all while successfully casting a Molotov cocktail in the general direction of the corporate music industry. For her savvy business approach, restless tour schedule, and oh yeah…that instantly recognizable confessional song craft…Difranco has enjoyed a career inspiring the masses who religiously flock to see her.

And yet, it’s hard to believe she has gone all these years without a career spanning, retrospective collection of tunes. While 1996’s live Living in Clip came close, it’s been 11 years since the release. So after having her first child back in January, Ani went to work hand-picking songs, and even re-recording 5 classics, to represent the enormous body of work she has accumulated over the years. The result of that work is Canon (Rightous Babe); a 2 CD set featuring three dozen songs that allow new fans to "dip their toes in this vast pool, while giving loyal fans a new way to revisit". - David Pitz
