Who Replaces The Replacements -- No One, Evidently.

I'm no huge fan of Jimmy Fallon, never liked him on Saturday Night Live, never liked a movie he was in and find his particular brand of "aww shucks, who me?" earnestness something of a put-on, but if he's done one thing right at all it's in occasionally waking the long-dormant musical masterminds or freaks of yesteryear and injecting them like a strain of something sinister into the veins of normally anemic late-night talk-shows. Like a trade-off for too-frequent appearances by goons like Maroon 5 and Pitbull, he somehow manages to magic up acts as eclectic as Archers of Loaf, Randy Newman, and last night: The Replacements.

Back on NBC for the first time since their raucous SNL appearance in 1986 and back for one of their first public appearances since retiring in 1991, The Replacements put in a fun but disappointing rendition of "Alex Chilton" (definitely one of their most driving toe-tappers): there are a few spots where Paul Westerberg is clearly gasping for air or losing the train of the song, and the rest of the band can be visibly seen to flag in certain parts. It's a fair but unimpressive representation of the band's infectiously energetic brand of rock; it almost feels like they're trying to make up for their wild-child antics back in 1986, like a belabored apology. God willing they'll bring a little bit more kick when they play their concert over at the Forest Hills Stadium on September 19th.
