This week we've got an incredibly colorful mixtape curated by Stars singer Torquil Campbell... Or as he is called when spinning tunes (as he did before our Stars concert shoot, "Dead Child Star". Enjoy. I know I enjoyed putting it together. -joe puglisi

    1. "Lions In My Own Garden (Exit Someone)" - Prefab Sprout - Self-Released First Single

What if George Gershwin and Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder and Keats combined their DNA and made a songwriter? This is what would happen. My hero. My guide. My Paddy McCaloon. This is the first Prefab Sprout single, from 1984.

"and im pounding out messages loud on the drum/the rumours have started that we are still young/ lions in my on garden/exit someone"

Paddy called it this because the first letter of each word spells out "Limoges", whatever the hell that is....

[Ed. Note: Couldn't resist looking it up. Limoges, the French city where Paddy McCaloon's former girlfriend was staying at the time. Neat!]

    2. "Waterloo Sunset" - The Kinks - Transmissions

the second greatest pop song ever written. It almost makes me love London again.....

    3. "I Am I Be" - De La Soul - Buhloone Mind State

The most profound hip-hop song ever. Am I using too manty superlatives? F*ck it....I'm playing legendary sh*t here. From their incredible album Buhloone Mind State. I could play any De La Soul song and it would kick Jay-z in the teeth every time. I think he would admit that.

    4. "The Energy Of Death" - Apostle Of Hustle - Folkloric Feel

I love the title of this song. I love the men who made it. And I love how cool it feels to listen to it. Andrew Whiteman is f*cking cool. I mean really, genuinely, cool. Not cool like people are in New York City. Cool like Emily Dickinson was cool. Seen.

[Ed. Note: This made me laugh an awesome laugh.]

    5. "Best And Marsh" - New Order - "Technique" (b-side)

This is an instrumental b-side from the "Round and Round" single off of Technique. Whenever I put this song on I thank God I was born in Northern England. It's the only place people have ever made proper white soul music. Know how they did it? They removed all the "soul" and replaced with the sound of machinery and northern rain. So sexy. So sad. Lets do drugs! Already did,,,,,

    6. "If We Can't Trust Each Other" - Ann Peebles - I Can't Stand The Rain

A million hours at a marriage therapist would never result in the quality of advice Ann Peebles gives the listener on this incredible jam. "If we can't trust each other/ we don't need one another". Um, yes. That's just absolutely true isn't it?

    7. "Juxtaposed With U" - Super Furry Animals - Rings Around The World

It never ceases to amaze me how these boys wrote a song that sounds like "The Loveboat" theme and features vocoder and the chorus uses the word 'Juxtaposed" and is so unbelievably GOOD. I love this band so much....

    8. "German Heart" - Dead Kids - Dead Party

Incredible name for a band. Unless you want people to buy the records. Fortunately these f*cked up geniuses don't seem to care about that. This track is produced by Tom McFall, who produced Set Yourself On Fire and The Five Ghosts and is one of my favourite humans. So wicked and so hooky and so sad....perfection.

    9. "Someday We'll All Be Free" - Donny Hathaway - Extension Of A Man

I don't know what to say. This man is beyond words. This makes me feel actually physically more beautiful while I'm listening to it. It makes a better person of you.....

    10. "I Confess" - The Beat - Special Beat Service

I've been listening to the beat a lot lately. they were THE band in grade 8. I totally see why. This was the good bit of living in the eighties; men who wore eyeliner and drain pipe trousers and pulled birds like .....like...like a bird feeder.....

    -torquil campell

[Ed. Note: I am totally adopting that phrase, despite the fact that "bird" has a diffrent connotation in the states. Loved this mixtape. Thanks Torq!]
