London indie-folk trio Daughter
announced the release date for their upcoming third album this week, but the project isn't what you'd expect. The follow-up to last year's Not to Disappear
is more than just a stand alone record - it's a soundtrack to a new video game called Life Is Strange: Before the Storm.
Developing a score might seem like a departure from the band's typical work, but Daughter has always sounded all-encompassing and cinematic. Singer Elena Tonra wrote, "We loved the story on first read as it centers around realistic female lead characters who are emotional, intelligent, sensitive and badass in equal measure." Apparently, the virtual reality adventure game will include some pretty heavy storylines, which feels like familiar territory for Daughter. Their sound has always found a balance between chaos and beauty, still evident on the soundtrack's lead single, "Burn It Down."
"Burn It Down" feels like vintage Daughter, even though it was written under unusual circumstances. The melody is carried by sweeping strings and a piercing beat, with haunting effects applied to Tonra's vocals. Daughter has never been afraid to write dark lyrics, and this single is no different. There's something especially chilling about the way Tonra sings, "Always said I had a way with words / Never knew I could be speechless."
Music From Before the Storm
is out this September, just before Daughter kicks off what's sure to be an emotional tour with The National.
