The National just released a new single, "Carin at the Liquor Store," along with a simple but effective music video directed by Casey Reas and edited by Matthew Miller. "Carin at the Liquor Store" is the third single that has been released so far from the band's upcoming album Sleep Well Beast, which is set to be released on September 8.

"Carin at the Liquor Store" is a slow, emotional ballad that begins simply with a rolling piano part, soft and subtle synths hiding underneath, and Matt Berninger's gentle, emotive voice singing lyrics like "I was a war, I was a creature/I'd get on the ground the second I'd see you." When the spacious-sounding drums come in, the song continues to steadily plod along as Matt's vocals and the underlying synth slowly, subtly grow in intensity. A lamenting guitar solo toward the end of the song cements the overall feeling of somber introspection.

The video, captured with a negative film filter that creates the effect of inverted colors, fits the feeling of the song. The mostly blue and white color scheme and the visual trails following their movements make the band look almost ghostly as they perform their wistful song. Both the song and video are simple, yet and yet their evocative natures make them both sonically and visually intriguing.
