It's no surprise that Outside Lands is one of the most in-demand festivals of the summer, with headliners like Radiohead, Lionel Richie, Lana Del Rey, Grimes, Chance The Rapper, and (somehow) more. In addition to awesome acts, it also happens to be in one of the most beautiful places in the world, San Francisco, CA. It's usually known for it's perfect, year-round temperatures, but we were a little caught off guard this past weekend. Average temperatures hit fifty-five to sixty degrees, and although that's nothing for us New Yorkers, it's bizarre for the west coast. But don't think that that affected the crowd's energy levels -- because they were way up. And speaking of the crowd, it was one of the most crowded fests we've been to yet. Yeah, we were actually pushing our way through tons of people on our way to each stage. But man, was it worth it. We caught some great acts on Day 1, like Marian Hill, Whitney, St. Lucia, and more. Check it out below.
Fans went insane
for J. Cole as he played all of his best hits.
Philadelphia-based songwriting duo, Jeremy Lloyd and Samantha Gongol, AKA Marian Hill, started off Day 1 strong. They played a 12:45 PM set this year, but we expect to see them at a later slot next year.
Nashville-based indie-progressive band, Moon Taxi, had an awesome energy on stage, also earlier in the day. Vocalist Trevor Terndrup teared it up.
Ra Ra Riot
One of our indie rock/pop favorites. Ra Ra Riot sure earned the "Riot" in their name. #PunsForDays.
Ra Ra Riot from The Hype Hotel
Let's be honest, singer/guitarist Jean-Philip Grobler is a star. He works the stage with confidence and belts out catchy hooks like it's nothing.
St Lucia from the Hype Hotel
LA producer/DJ Tokimonsta, or Jennifer Lee, lit up the stage and pumped up the crowd with her epic dance hits.
We have a soft spot in our hearts for Chicago indie-rock band, Whitney. If you're into Twin Peaks or White Reaper, you gotta see these guys live.
