St. Catherine, the full length album from Real Estate's Matt Mondanile is nothing short of whimsical. With this creative pursuit, Mondanile will stop being known only for his work as a guitarist, and begin receiving the immense applause he deserves. The album feels like clouds covered in pastel pink melted gumdrops and birthday cake flavored ice cream.
The record starts out with an instrumental tune, "Disney afternoons," and quickly transitions into a world of delicately balanced vocals and smooth, yet upbeat melodies. The album feels complete in every sense of the word. One ethereal song carefully strung into another and another makes every Ducktails release easy to listen to and impossible to disregard.
My favorite track is "Heaven's Room" because it serves as an example of how polished each detail of the album truly is. Mondanile sings, "Mary watched me from above spend my days in misery/ She offered me a room in heaven saving me from grief." The perfect pairing of strings, simple percussion lines, and keys makes each track feel timeless. I would highly recommend listening to St. Catherine outside with some friends on a quiet summer evening.
