is the rock band that never seems to fade. With the release of their debut album, Telephono
, already 18 years ago, and the upcoming release of their eighth studio album They Want My Soul
, Spoon is proof that one can age, but not necessarily go out of style. They Want My Soul
is a 10-track masterpiece of simplicity, yet obvious dynamics. Precise drum rhythms, guitar work, and vocals exude effortlessness, as understated flares and simple effects undermine many tracks to boost their sounds to a current, fresh, and irresistible level.
With the making of the new album, the band made some considerable internal changes. They switched to the renowned Loma Vista Recordings label, and hired industry-known producers Joe Chiccarelli, noted for his work with My Morning Jacket
and The Shins
, and Dave Fridmann, recognized for his work with The Flaming Lips
. As a result, the 10 songs on They Want My Soul
achieve a more modern and fresh alternative sound than their previous work, yet succeed in keeping the band's true-to-rock identity. "Inside Out," combines the band's rock roots with an electro-psychadelic feel, as its slow, meticulous pace immerses you in their world of synthy keyboard notes and echoes. The synthesized backbeat of "Outlier" continues this electronic-based trend, giving the track a current mainstream and alternative feel. That said, both songs feature the electrifying vocals of Britt Daniels, and the synthesizers are just another addition to Spoon's already well defined and controlled sound, in the best way.
With They Want My Soul
, Spoon has shown that they are as strong as ever. They are capable of keeping up with the trends of the modern rock and alternative worlds, yet effortlessly maintain their own identity. They are not going anywhere, anytime soon. They Want My Soul
is out tomorrow, August 5th, on Loma Vista Recordings. Pre-order your copy here
