How to Choose the Perfect Tinder Anthem

Every time I'm hanging out with a group of people and one person brings up Tinder, inevitably by the end of the conversation everyone is on the app, swiping or revamping their profiles. It's the kind of thing that's easy to forget about for months at a time, only to be swept back up into the addictive habit of, well, swiping. This very situation happened to me just a few days ago, so obviously Tinder has been on my mind.

If you're as suggestible as I am, you're probably feeling drawn to the app right now after reading that opening paragraph. Or maybe you've been on Tinder this whole time, I don't know your life. Anyway, now is as good a time as ever to give your profile a makeover! Choosing pictures and writing a bio can be stressful, as they're the things almost everyone is going to be looking at, but don't forget to put some thought into that Tinder anthem. Whether you use the feature to actually show what kind of music you like, make a statement, or make a joke, your choice may say a lot about you to potential swipers. Not to worry - I'm here to help you out.

Here's are a few different ways to choose the perfect Tinder anthem:

    1. Make it a (tasteful) joke.

Songs that are low key memes (like Smash Mouth's "All Star," Oasis' "Wonderwall," George Michael's "Careless Whisper," etc.), tasteful. "Psycho Killer" by Talking Heads, not so tasteful. Feel free to really follow your own sense of humor here - you definitely want to be original if you're trying to stand out. Picking a song based on the title can also be a good move, because most people don't actually listen to the song anyway, but make sure you at least listen to the song before you choose it. You don't want to accidentally make things weird. And just remember, we're going for funny here, not vaguely threatening.

    2. Let people know what you want.

"I Wanna Be Yours," "I Wanna Be The One," etc. Or maybe you're going for something more along the lines of Funkadelic's "Hit It and Quit It." Either way, this option will probably require you to know what you want first.

    3. Describe yourself.

Right off the bat, I can think of a couple good ones I would choose from Charli XCX's most recent mixtape/album - "Dreamer" and "Emotional." Really, this one takes some knowing yourself. Maybe start off with a bit of soul searching, go on an intense journey where you get to explore the world but it's actually just a metaphor for exploring yourself… or you could just ask a friend to give you some adjectives to work with. Either way, using a song that describes you as your anthem actually seems like that's what the feature is there for, so go wild.

    4. Choose your actual favorite song.

Depending on what kind of person you are, this could be the easiest or the hardest option. If you already know your favorite song, go ahead and slap it up there! As long as it's not something embarrassing - remember, Tinder is all about making shallow, snap judgments. If you're like most people and don't have a favorite song that you can name off the top of your head, you can choose something you think represents your actual music taste well. Again, be wary with this option; if your music taste points to you being cool and exciting, this will probably go well for you. Otherwise… maybe stick with the memes.
