Yesterday, Will Smith
and DJ Jazzy Jeff
debuted their new song "Get Lit," at the Livewire Festival in Blackpool, England. The song is the duo's first since their 1998 single "Lovely Daze." Back in October of 2015, Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff teased a musical reunion, but their plans for a full summer tour in 2016 fell through. Aside from his appearance on Bomba Estereo's "Fiesta" remix, "Get Lit" is the first song Will Smith has put out since his 2005 solo album Lost and Found
. So, after more than a decade of relative silence in the music world, Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff are making a comeback.
"Get Lit" is more reggae-filled EDM than hip-hop, with hyped-up builds and drops defining the structure of the song. As the reggae-inspired intro plays, with accented upbeats and a classic Caribbean bassline, Will Smith introduces the song, saying "Shine those lights, lemme see those light. That's right. From inside, we're shining our lights and we gon' brighten up the darkness in this world." According to NME
, Smith wanted to make a song like "Get Lit," as a response to the "chaos and confusion" that has recently pervaded our world. I've always kind of seen Will Smith as more of an actor than a rapper - probably because he hasn't released anything since 2005 - but I've always gotten good vibes from the whole Smith family, so I'm definitely happy to see him getting back into an industry he obviously loves.
