I don't know what it is, but there's something about melancholic folk that speaks to me on a deep level. I'm not a naturally melancholic person -- although, I suppose, like most folks, I have my moments -- but listening to Bon Iver or The Weepies or The Mountain Goats hits me hard every time. When was the last time you played "This Year" by the Mountain Goats? There's a slight element of triumph to that song but it's raging against a deep and all-consuming nihilism. And on Glen Hansard's latest track, "Winning Streak," he channels that painful well of emotion. The Oscar-winning songwriter has a new solo record, Didn't He Ramble, coming out next month, and this track is a sign of great things to come.
