There's something very end-of-summer about driving around in a Cadillac--or at least turning the bass up and pretending that your Honda Civic is a Cadillac. Given the slick, vintage design of the car, it's become something of a cultural fixation, with plenty of musicians penning songs about the car. Below are the eight greatest Cadillac songs of the last five decades, for your road-tripping pleasure.
1. "Cadillatica" - Big KRIT
Unquestionably, the Cadillac of recent Cadillac songs. Followed by the okay Lac Lac a few years later. Like most post-Kanye rap, an ode to the riches to be gained and the follies to be tolerated in becoming a rap star. Come for the synth hook. Stay for the biscuit.
2. "Throw Some D's" - Rich Boy
Released a full eight years before "Cadillatica," and probably more frequently referenced, but lyrically inferior to Big KRIT's hit. Despite Rich Boy's limited long-term career success, the song lives on in more recent remixes: see Kanye West's and Big Wild's.
3. "Pink Cadillac" - Natalie Cole
It's possible Bruce Springsteen's cover is better known, but let's take a look at Natalie Cole's 1987 version because the video is very, very good. When you guys stop to fill up your car at the gas station, you also use the pump as a microphone, right?
4. "Black Cadillacs" - Modest Mouse
Compared to the other tracks, this one's a bit of a bummer, because it's about dying. But really, isn't everything?
5. "White Walls" - Macklemore feat. Schoolboy Q
*Sigh*. Listen. Listen. Macklemore's corny videos are entertaining. His silly lyrics are catchy. He's the kind of artist my kids are going to make fun of me for listening to, twenty years from now. This song is no exception. Thank god some producer had the idea to bring in Schoolboy Q so that this wasn't just Macklemore alone in a mariachi outfit singing about his whip.
6. "Two Black Cadillacs" - Carrie Underwood
Carrie Underwood/country ballads may not be your cup of tea, but let's take a moment to respect that the man who cheats on Carrie Underwood will be in serious trouble. She'll either destroy your car, or use her car to get revenge.
7. "One Piece at a Time" - Johnny Cash
God, Johnny Cash was so cool. What's the last good heist song you listened to lately? Was it better than a song about a guy building a cadillac one piece at a time from parts stolen from the GM factory where he works?
8. "Freeway of Love" - Aretha Franklin
A song that frequently references pink cadillacs--was it inspiration for the 1987 hit of that name? This is a driving-around-with-the-windows-down summer song. Someone please bring the saxophone solo back in fashion.
