It's been years since I've been to California, but if I had to imagine it, Valley Queen
's laid back, mellow, calming sound flawlessly captures summer on the west coast. The Los Angeles-based band dropped their single, "High Expectations," on Friday via Canvas Club Records and are gearing up to release their debut album soon.
Frontwoman Natalie Carol's voice is gorgeous, stripped down but soulful on the almost folk-sounding track, chillingly similar to Sharon Van Etten. The band itself has been compared to Fleetwood Mac and Florence Welch and for good reason -- Carol brings her Arkansas roots to the track, the comfort and familiarity of home bringing the country-rock sound to the song. But what makes Valley Queen unique, especially on "High Expectations," is the combination of Carol's vocals and the soothing bass line that give it true west coast vibes.
With its relaxing sound, this song is the perfect mellow summer song. And now that their debut album coming up, the band is going on tour for the rest of the summer until October in the US. Give the track a listen above -- Valley Queen is a band that shows real promise, and are absolutely worth giving a try.
