Here's something you weren't expecting: indie-rock superstar Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent) is directing a female-led adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray

…take a moment to comprehend that sentence. Yes, this is actually happening.

In case you didn't know, this isn't the first time that Annie Clark has taken up the directorial helm. Her debut, The Birthday Party, was featured in the horror anthology XX. Check out a clip from that film below, to see just how obvious it is that Annie Clark directed it (it aligns with the St. Vincent aesthetic to a tee).

Also, film in general has had a huge influence on Annie Clark's artistry under the St. Vincent moniker. Her 2009 album, Actor, was created out of her unique method for dealing with writer's block: she watched scenes from her favorite films with the sound off, composed music for them in GarageBand, and then went on to write the lyrics for them and add the vocal melodies.

The Picture of Dorian Gray is Oscar Wilde's only novel, and is regarded as one of the most important works of fiction in all of English literature. It's been adapted numerous times, but there hasn't really been a well-received Dorian Gray film since what is generally regarded to be the most successful attempt in 1945. So, fans of both St. Vincent and the novel will certainly have their eye on the project, because a good Dorian Gray adaptation will mean good things for die-hard Oscar Wilde admirers, as well as Clark herself. Annie Clark's adaptation of The Picture of Dorian Gray will be developed by Lionsgate, with David Birke on board to write the script.
