Some artists have gotten so huge that they, along with their fandoms, have become household names - Justin Bieber
and his Beliebers, One Direction
and their Directioners. But what makes a fandom name great? At best, a fandom name is cool and appealing enough to make non-fans interested enough to join the fandom themselves. The worst fandom names are cringey and definitely don't make people want to be a part of it. Whether the name comes from the artist or the fans themselves, there's a lot of weight in a name, and the decision should be made carefully. With that being said, let's take a look at some of the best and worst fandom names in music.
1. Lady Gaga - Little Monsters
"Little Monsters" is a classic fandom name that most people know by now, probably partially because of how good the name itself is. It's cute, personal to Lady Gaga (it's referencing one of her early projects, The Fame Monster
), and the name rolls off the tongue. It also fits Gaga's brand, and subsequently the type of people that are Gaga's biggest fans. Lady Gaga's "thing" has always been accepting and loving your weirdness and uniqueness, which is captured pretty well in the name "little monsters."
2. Katy Perry - KatyCats
"KatyCats" is another cute one. It seems like a play on kitty cats, which is super friendly and inviting, especially if you're like me and love cats. In fact, I'm not really a Katy Perry fan - the only songs I know of hers are the ones that are inescapable - but the name almost makes me want to become a fan, just so I can call myself a KatyCat.
3. The Killers - The Victims
This one just fits so well - of course, where there are killers, there are victims. Sure, it's a little morbid, but I think the best fandom names are specific and unique to the band or artist. It wouldn't really make sense for "The Victims" to be the fan base name for any other band. While many fan bases choose the name themselves, The Killers were actually the ones to name their fandom.
4. Barry Manilow - The Fanilows
Honestly, I'm not planning on listening to Barry Manilow any time soon and I didn't know his fans were called "Fanilows" until I started looking around at fandom names for this list, but this name is probably my favorite. "The Fanilows" - that's just so funny! Puns are always a great option for fandom names, and this one just so happens to also roll off the tongue.
5. Charli XCX - Charli's Angels
Charli XCX decided to go with the name "Charli's Angels" on this Facebook post
when a fan edited hastily cropped pictures of Charli's face onto an actual Charlie's Angels
post. You know a name is good when the artist sees it themselves and decides it's too good not to use. The name is clever, and that picture is pretty funny.
6. Nicki Minaj - Barbies
"Barbies" is a great name for Nicki Minaj's fan base because of her whole Barbie
aesthetic - it's more personal and unique to Nicki Minaj than just adding "er" to the end of a band's name (e.g. Directioners, or Jason Derulo
1. Meghan Trainor - Megatrons
The name "Megatrons" gives me the same kind of weirdly off-brand vibes that Meghan Trainor herself does. To me, it comes off as more cheesy than clever, and that's never what you want from a name. As you can probably tell, I'm not a Meghan Trainor fan, and the fan base name doesn't really inspire to be a fan any more than her music does.
2. Rihanna - Rihanna Navy
I love Rihanna, but "Rihanna Navy" somehow makes Rihanna sound like a second place artist. If you're going to go with a militaristic fandom name (which I'm not really a fan of anyway), you'd think the first thought would be "army," not "navy." That makes it sound like somebody else took the "army" idea first and Rihanna was left with "navy." I don't know if that's actually what happened, but I do know Britney Spears' fan base is called the "Britney Army," so…
3. Ellie Goulding - Goulddiggers
This name is definitely my least favorite. While some are simply unoriginal, this name is pretty cringey and doesn't fit Ellie Goulding's vibe at all. Again, Ellie Goulding is a great artist, but I feel like her fan base calling themselves a play on what is usually an insult just doesn't seem to fit. Now, Green Day's "Idiots" - a runner up for my "best" list - that works well and makes sense. "Goulddiggers," not so much. The video below features all of Ellie's fans though, which is cute.
4. Selena Gomez - Selenators
The worst thing about this name is just that it's unoriginal. Like, really? Whoever came up with this name couldn't come up with something a little more clever or unique? Something that in some way describes what Selena and her fans are about?
5. Ariana Grande - Arianators
6. Demi Lovato - Lovatics
While "Lovatics" isn't the worst fandom name I've seen, it just doesn't really seem to hold much meaning, and it doesn't roll off the tongue. Demi Lovato's songs are super catchy, but her fandom's name, not so much.
