On Friday, pop singer Billie Eilish
released "my boy," another song from her upcoming debut EP, dont smile at me.
The EP is set to be released on August 11, and for the past month Eilish has been releasing singles from the project. Everything she's been releasing from the upcoming EP has been super impressive, especially considering she's only 15. I mean, when I was 15 I was a mess. I'm still kind of a mess. But Billie Eilish has precocious talents for writing and singing, and comparisons have been made between her and Lorde.
The coolest part of her newest song "my boy" is the tempo change after the first verse. Tempo changes in pop music are pretty rare, but of course Billie Eilish makes it work. The unexpected change really serves to make the song even more interesting than it would be otherwise. The song starts with a chiller, jazz-like vibe, and a layer of darkness and mystery. When the speed shifts, it becomes more upbeat but maintains the same heaviness that it began with. The song has some clever lines too, like "My boy loves his friends like I love my split ends, and by that I mean he cuts ‘em off." Overall, "my boy" manages to be both musically interesting and perfectly catchy as a well-constructed pop song. With each Eilish releases, the EP becomes more and more exciting, and I'm definitely anticipating that her official debut is going to be a game changer.
