You may hear the name Frances Cone and assume that it's a one woman band, when in actuality the breezy and bright music group is made up of three members: frontwoman Cristina Cone, guitarist Jeff Malinowski and bassist Andrew Doherty. Cone explains that although she wrote most of the Frances Cone EP herself, the arrangement was a group effort. "I wasn't totally into being a singer songwriter. I always wanted to have a group of four people that felt like we were all in it together," Cone explains, but also admits that such a group was hard to find. Luckily, the band soon pieced together as fast friends with a creative spark, a bond that inexplicably "just worked."
Since then, the tight-knit Brooklyn-based band has experienced a humble meteoric rise in the year or so since their inception, possibly due to their unorthodox approach to songwriting. Cone proudly claims that she has a "really strong aversion" to what's expected — if it feels like an "obvious what-comes-next" element of pop music is around the corner, Frances Cone goes in the opposite direction, which is more like a much needed detour from the norm than a jarring turn of events.
Along with their unconventional techniques, Frances Cone continues to shake up musicality and theme by matching their slightly darker lyrics with a major key, which results in an overall uplifting sound. "I don't want to ever emotionally manipulate," the singer resolutely claims while explaining her upbringing in Southern Baptist churches, which may be the root of the band's practice of not being overly forceful with their motifs.
But now Cone has escaped the grasps of the church, and she and her bandmates are ready to further develop their sound with their upcoming full length album, which they promise includes some more upbeat tunes. Malinowski is excited to "play for an hour and have it not just be listening music. Let's have a little fun too." Not to say that their EP isn't fun, though it is more on the mellow side, which we got to hear in an intimate performance at our Bands and Brews Session a few weeks back. Check out our interview with the band below, and be on the lookout for the fun that Frances Cone has in store for us in the future.
