Newport Folk Festival: The Greenhorn Goes

We look forward every year to the Newport Folk Festival. It is unique in the now "Festival Industrial Complex" for its longevity and quirkiness. The Festival has been running for the most part since 1959. There is no other Festival that we are aware of that has been running as long in the US. Newport is old school, Music takes precedent over the "Experiences" now favored by the modern festival. The centerpieces of this years Festival were Roger Waters' performance with My Morning Jacket on Friday night and the Finale on Sunday when Bob Dylan's storied and now million dollar guitar from 1965 was dusted off and played by Dawes' Tyler Goldsmith in celebration of Dylan's going electric that got him boo'd at the '65 Folk Festival.

David Pitz our Head of Content has Newport in red ink on his calendar every year. He loves the whole thing, staying at a cute Bed and Breakfast and geeking out all weekend at Ft. Adams State Park, dinner back in town after a day full of music. This year there was a change and Mr. Pitz is in Alaska dodging Glaciers, huge bears and throwing salmon so we sent a greenhorn photo intern. This intern had never attended a festival before let alone dove into the hyper competitive photo pits of Newport that are populated with super serious photographers from all the North East media outlets large and small. These guys don't get out much anymore so they flock to something their Editors know and they can drive to making the pits extra competitive and crowded.

Our Greenhorn can be seen in the scrum during the rainy Roger Waters, My Moring Jacket, and Lucius jam.

For Saturday our reporter experienced the best of the festival from the waters off Ft. Adams. She turned in this photo as her coverage for the day.

Her companion is clearly enjoying the surprise set from the incomparable James Taylor.

Sunday was more productive with lots of coverage of some of Baebles favorite acts.
