just released a new single, "Today's Supernatural," and we dare you not to be excited! But beware: like most truly good music, and like everything that is Animal Collective, this song demands a few listens before it really soaks in. The first time you play it, all you'll really hear is the bizarre high-pitched voice frantically trilling "Come on le le le le go." Don't give up: second time, you'll notice the surprising musicality within the electronic waves. Third, you'll be desperately digging through the dense layers like an archaeologist on deadline. Power through to the fourth listen, it will seem like an entirely different song. The equivalent of a musical kaleidoscope, this song will never look the same twice.
Animal Collective isn't afraid to demand a lot of its audience. And they can afford to make their music at an above-average listening level because of their cult like following. (I drank the kool-aid years ago) This isn't a background track for the acoustically lazy, but if you're ready to work for it, Animal Collective will make you a believer. Check out their new album, Centipede Hz
, set to be released on September 4th.
