Kodaline is currently taking the Irish music scene by a storm. After having released two EPs to critical success since 2011, the band's debut LP entitled In A Perfect World is sitting at No. 2 on top of the Irish charts. Two songs from the album, "Love Like This" and "High Hopes" are also in the top 50 in the IRMA 100 singles charts. While the LP's release still looms in the U.S. (it's due out October 8th), Kodaline has taken its lead single and masterfully crafted a five-song EP around it.
Love Like This, the new EP, is an incredible display of the ability to write catchy, pop rock. The record features four different songs and a piano ballad reprise of "Love Like This" as its conclusion. Each song takes on a different personality making the EP flow with dynamic contrast. From the ever-catchy title track to the more calming and aired-out "Midnight," Kodaline is finding ways to tickle your every emotion. A personal favorite, "What It Is," is a great example of the different styles the band incorporates into their writing. Opening with the cooling, Chris Martin-like croon of frontman Stephen Garrigan, the song gradually builds into a choral howler of epic proportion.
With songs about living life the way you want and loving in a way that most desire, Kodaline is effectively creating music that resonates with a wide range of listeners. Sharing musical elements with artists like fellow Irish-rockers U2, as well as fun, and even Mumford and Sons, Kodaline is poised to make a significant splash in the US. We were lucky enough to catch them in Austin back in March and if their performance then was any indicator, the band is sure to do big things.
