Kenny Wayne Shepherd
has put out another single from the upcoming album Lay It On Down
, and it's loaded with great stuff. "Diamonds & Gold" is an upbeat thumper that has soul like a New Orleans brass band, opening up with a blast of bright trumpets accented by the smooth voice of what I can only hope is a Hammond B3 through a Leslie speaker. This song definitely has a bigger focus on overall production and bringing all its parts together in funky synergy rather than simply being a showcase of Kenny's guitar chops. In fact, he demonstrates a great deal of restraint in this song, keeping the guitar pretty far back in the mix, giving the rest of the band room to shine and only taking the spotlight when it suits the music. It shows a great deal of artistic maturity that can't often be said of big shot guitarists with wild, twitchy fingers.
This song just makes me even more excited for the rest of the album. All that's left to do now is wait until August 4th for the worldwide release of Lay It On Down
and see what other rare gems Kenny throws at us.
