Don't underestimate the value of a great hook. When a song reaches peak catchiness, certain types of music fans want to dismiss it out of hand. Those music fans are f***ing idiots. There's a reason all of your favorite indie bands consistently mention Pet Sounds as one of their biggest influences as a songwriter. Brian Wilson could write a hook better than anybody before him and possibly anybody since. And on her track "Good Times," which we're premiering the video for today, Jess Penner delivers one of those hooks that burrows into those lizard corners of your brain...those corners where you find yourself humming the melody of the song on your walk to work even though you're technically listening to the new (and consummately excellent) Tame Impala. Throw in some 90s alt-rock guitar work that keeps the twee-pop hook from getting too precious, and Jess Penner becomes that Courtney Barnett/Feist/Kim Deal fusion you never realized you needed.
(That said, I have a pathological issue about being dirty, and boy, everybody in this paint-soaked music video is much, much braver than me.)
