Despite a 28-year age gap, and the enormous distances from their respective hometowns of Lagos, Nigeria and London, England, drummer Tony Allen and vocalist Damon Albarn
can't seem to get enough of one another. The duo have collaborated on multiple projects in the past, including a track on Allen's album Home Cooking
, released in 2002, and Albarn's 2013 Africa Express initiative. The pair is back together again, and reunited to record "Go Back," a track on Allen's forthcoming record Film of Life
The song features Albarn on vocals and keyboard, as Allen's flawless drum rhythms shine through an exuberant combination of horns and a smooth bass line. Allen's laid-back afro-beat rhythms, reminiscent of those in his acclaimed work with Fela Kutis Africa 70, make the new track appear timeless and easy. When merged with Albarn's contemporary vocals, the song becomes a beautiful blend of agelessness and modernity. Listen to "Go Back" below.
