What do you do after composing music for one of the most successful musicals of the 21st century? Go back to your solo career, I guess. Well, that's what Duncan Sheik is doing, with the imminent release of his 2015 LP. Nine years after winning an excessive amount of awards for writing the score for wildly renowned musical Spring Awakening, Sheik has released a new video for his song "Photograph."
Exercising simplicity at its best, the music video for the song depicts a black screen, shifting minutely through each frame. On this ominous black screen, comes small white lines, twisting and convulsing horizontally and vertically. Periodically, they assemble to make shapes or concrete images, while mostly assembling for more of a decorative appeal. Though visually interesting, the undemanding nature of the images provides time and space to listen to the Sheik's lyrical prowess. With a beautifully sullen vocal style, Sheik caresses the plucking of the guitar to mold something forceful yet viscerally ethereal.
Though his style can seem pretty obviously theatrical, his music is indubitably beautiful nonetheless. His new album, Legerdemain, is out October 9th.
