backtrack: bombay the hard way

    After doing extensive research into this track, I'm still kind of confused about its origins. But what I know is: it's from an album called Bombay the Hard Way: Guns, Cars, and Sitars, a 1999 collaboration between DJ Shadow and Dan the Automator that gets most of its material from 70s Bollywood scores.

    They funk it up with all sorts of horns, electric guitar grooves, and Blaxploitation movie themes, but keep the traditional sitar and even some of the movies' dialogue. Then they throw in some cool beats and start looping stuff. The whole album's pretty sweet (and there's a sequel!), check out "Ganges a Go-Go" below. -selden paterson
