It's been almost three years since M.I.A.'s last album Matangi was released, and she's been talking a lot about her newest piece this year -- but hasn't set a name or a final date for it until now.

Yesterday, the artist posted the lyrics to her single "Go Off" with Skrillex that's releasing this Friday, and today she and writer Sinthujan Varatharajah put a text up on her website about the treatment of those seeking asylum around the world, an issue M.I.A. has been vocal about. The text concludes "GO OFF First single on the 15.7.16" and "AIM 9/9." M.I.A.'s representatives confirmed to Pitchfork that the album was titled AIM and it would be released on September 9th of this year.

She's been steadily releasing songs off the album already -- in March she dropped "MIA OLA - Foreign Friend" on Soundcloud, and her songs "Swords" and "Warriors" that were released in 2015 and were part of her audiovisual project "Matahdatah Scroll 01 Broader Than a Border" will also appear on the album. Matahdatah was also the name of this forthcoming album at the time.

It's been long awaited. M.I.A. said on Twitter that she's been struggling not to just leak the album early. The English musician admitted it could be her "last LP" in May, and that she would be giving it to an American label for release, although her lack of a visa makes it so she cant promote it in the U.S. or tour.

Either way, it seems to be her last release with a major label and she seems like she's taking on some serious global issues in this one--M.I.A.'s never shied away from controversy, so I'm excited to listen to AIM in its entirety.
