Last year, Empress Of
, AKA Lorely Rodriguez, released her excellent one-off single "Woman Is A Word
," which we called "a piece of quiet but radical feminism." Now she's back with another single and I'm very pleased to say that she's continuing this trend of rebellion. "You love the sound of your own voice / Is this conversation an interview?" she starts off the song with. She continues with insult after insult, "Jump down from your high horse, let's talk truth... Pour out the champagne while I sing myself the blues."
If you were to take out the lyrics and just listen to the music and the melody, the sweetness of it all is deceiving. It's a harsh song, but I can confidently say it's probably how most women (and men) feel. Think I'm going to fail? Well, you can go to hell. It's more empowering than anything, and if Rodriguez continues this wave of self-assurance, she might just prove the people she's singing about wrong.
Empress Of released her debut album, Me,
in 2015. Details of a new project are currently unclear, and we'll be eagerly refreshing our news feeds until then.
