Early last month, electronic trio Major Lazer
released "Know No Better" with rappers Quavo and Travis Scott, alongside former Fifth Harmony member Camila Cabello. I was completely convinced it would be a disaster, but it was a pleasant surprise to see the track become one of my favorites of the summer. The song had been out for nearly two months without an accompanying visual, until earlier today when Major Lazer dropped an interesting, and some may say questionable, music video for the dance track.
The actual performers of the song are seen in the video briefly hanging out in the studio, but the star of the video is a young boy around the age of 12 or 13, maybe. The video brings you along as the boy carries through with his daily routine of having a kind of shitty life–from accidentally setting himself on fire at school (don't you just hate it when that happens?) and the girls he likes constantly rejecting him. With the help of "Know No Better," the boy finds the confidence to dance his way into a more perfect reality. A reality in which a girl that looks like she could be his baby sitter kisses him under falling water–surely they switched the actors out and worked the angles so you couldn't tell. The video is, overall, intriguing and well made–but you have to admit that whole older girl/13 year old boy scenario is kind of bizarre.
