is fucking perfect. Having just had the opportunity to spend an unexpected portion of a Monday afternoon downing a cold one and watching the band work through a 40-minute set of their crunchy, catchy, yet spazzy breed of power-pop, the band have reached an immaculate point where there are no mistakes, every moment sounds divine, yet they can apparently still add improvised nuance to the mix at will...case in point being when singer Britt Daniel singled out drummer Jim Eno on an older tune: "Jim is still coming up with new shit." And not screwing up that new shit, by the way...perfection.
Speaking of "new shit", that's what inspired this afternoon's performance at Le Poisson Rouge. The band is a couple months away from releasing They Want My Soul
(their first new album in four years) and were using this little workday escape to do a live premiere of their new single "Rent I Pay" for the good folks over at NPR Music
. Well, it's only been about two hours since they played the thing and NPR has already sent the video out into the world. And guess what? It's fucking perfect.
They Want My Soul
will be released on August 5th via Loma Vista.
