Why does every artist have to drop their album on the same day? For us listeners, it's a challenge to catch up with every new release, especially when it's several different releases from all really exciting artists. So to cut through the noise and make sure you have all of your ducks in a row, we're briefly rounding up the most important albums to listen to this week.
1. Calvin Harris - Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1
We all have to agree that Calvin Harris is responsible for making some pretty groovy beats, even if you're not his biggest fan. With this album, he took away some of his typical electronic dance beats and changed them out for something more chill and tropical, with features from several rap artists. This album includes some big names like Ariana Grande, John Legend, Frank Ocean, and Kehlani. Songs to listen to are "Rollin" and "Faking It."
2. Washed Out - Mister Mellow
Washed Out brings forward some hazy dance music in their new visual album which includes various psychedelic images to go along with their laid back tracks. The majority of the album just includes an old school funk sound along with Ernest Greene's voice floating in and out of the background. Songs to listen to are "Get Lost" and "Burn Out Blues"
3. JAY-Z - 4:44
Though I haven't been able to take Jay-Z seriously since his verse in Kanye West's "Monster," this album has been highly anticipated and definitely received lots of hype. The most exciting songs are his collaborations with Beyonce on "Family Feud" and his other collaboration with Frank Ocean for "Caught Their Eyes."
4. LANY - LANY
LANY has given us many alternative indie rock/pop tracks in the past and their newest album. This album seems to have a bit of a more electronic touch to it, even just with the starting track "Dumb Stuff." Other tracks to listen to are "Flowers on the Floor" and "Pancakes." Also check out our recent piece on the most underrated LANY tracks
5. The Japanese House - Saw You In a Dream
Indie pop artist Amber Bain gives us a few more mellow tracks in her latest EP, which you can read all about here
. Songs to listen to are "3/3" and the title track.
6. Baio - Man of the World
The former Vampire Weekend bassist is out with the follow up to his 2015 debut record The Names
. From quick guitar strums to trumpet that come in and out, this is definitely an album we can groove to. Songs to the listen to are "PHILOSOPHY!" and "DANGEROUE ANAMAL." Check out our recent interview
with Baio, where we talked all about the world's current political climate and how that served as the main inspiration for this album.
7. ZZ Ward - The Storm
The bluesy singer gives us her first new project since Till The Casket Drops
in 2012. This new album has a little bit of a country feeling to it along with a whole lot of soulful vocals. Some highlight tracks are "Domino," "Hold On," and "Cannonball." Don't forget to check out our NEXT session with ZZ Ward, too:
8. Beach House – B-Sides and Rarities
Beach House came out with their seventh album and their latest work since Thank Your Lucky Stars.
