After teasing the song on Instagram
on Sunday, Rihanna finally released a stirring, orchestral ballad for the upcoming Star Trek Beyond soundtrack. "Sledgehammer" was the track the trailer needed to knock things out of the park.
"I hit a wall / I thought that I would hurt myself," Rihanna belts with soaring vocals that scream Sia, which her manager confirmed via Twitter
was written by the Aussie singer and songwriter. The explosive trailer pairs perfectly with the highly emotional track that is wrought with both pain and resilience.
A few Star Trek stars took to Instagram to thank Rihanna for the song as they grieved over the loss of 27-year-old Anton Yelchin, who died unexpectedly last week. "Thank you @badgalriri, for a beautiful song during one of the most difficult times for our StarTrek family. We know Anton would be proud." Zoe Saldana
Her co-star Zachary Quinto
also shouted out Rihanna for the song; "After such an unimaginably sad week for our star trek family - @badgalriri brings some light into the darkness," he wrote.
Although Rihanna seems to have had the song up her sleeve for a while now, having tweeted the lyrics "You're just another brick and I'm a sledgehammer" in May 2014, its a gorgeous track that brought something truly special to the film.
Either way, Sledgehammer seems to have convenient timing--fitting beautifully with the new Beyond trailer, and being an impassioned tribute to Yelchins tragic death. The film is set to release on July 22 of this year. Watch the official Star Trek Beyond trailer below.
