SONG OF THE DAY: 'Walkie Talkie' by Palm

Philadelphia art rockers Palm just released their sophomore effort Shadow Experts on Carpark Records last friday and we can't get enough. With entrancing and evasive guitar harmonies, disorientating rhythmic shifts, and a machine-esque bounce, their lead single "Walkie Talkie" is our Song of the Day.

Palm often references the fact that they have no formal training in their instruments. This has forced them to form their own language while playing with each other. Each phrase exchanged between the guitars, bass or drums feels like it's trying to say something to the other. And just as soon as this message falls out of phase, they throw you into a groove that you can't climb out of. Their song "Walkie Talkie" makes use of shoegaze-esque vocals that appear and disappear, seeming to only care about punctuating sections within the song as opposed to controlling the direction of their listener. Additionally, the vocals sound as if they're narrating your downward spiral into guitar-driven madness.

With two guitars panned hard left and right, it feels as though you have a walkie talkie in each ear and while it's hard to decipher what the conversation is about, it grows more and more compelling as you take the time to listen.
