The shooting that occurred at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando has been felt throughout the world. While it hasn't stopped the Pride month celebrations (and there's no way it ever could), its impact still lingers. Heightened security has been in talks for NYC's Pride parade this weekend, vigils have been held nationwide, and artists throughout the music community have spoken out and written letters. While it's important to have allies speaking out about the tragedy, its always more impactful to hear from someone that's a part of the marginalized group were discussing. Well, yesterday exactly that happened when Frank Ocean posted a heartfelt letter on his Tumblr explaining how the shooting has affected him.
Frank's letter draws comparisons of how hate towards people that are a part of the LGBTQIA community is found in different religions worldwide. He also details the first time the f-bomb was dropped in his presence. Frank Oceans letter is a necessity in these dire times because it feels authentic. While politicians bicker over gun laws that quite possibly won't change for a long while, now more than ever we need to listen to the voices in the LGBTQIA community instead of trying to speak for them as heterosexual allies.
