Some songs are simply irresistible, and demand to be listened to over and over again on repeat. Such is the case with this new NAWAS
song, "Who Are You." It's a foot-tapping club banger. It's the kind of song that's so catchy that you'll worry, after the first listen, that it will lose its luster after you've inevitably listened to it a hundred times.
Frontman Jake Nawas's androgynous singing is fire
on this track, and the instrumentals backing him up are as epic as they are illustrious. The song starts out quiet enough, with just an acoustic guitar and faint atmospheric noise in the background, but it doesn't take long until it explodes in infectious synth progressions and drum beats. The production is just fantastic.
It's clear that NAWAS is not only aware of R&B's past and present, but also determined to take it in new directions. Their influences are somewhat obvious, and it's no surprise that their website
lists Justin Timberlake and Kanye West among their inspirations. But "Who Are You" is far from a repackaging of what you've already heard a million times before. It's as inspired as it is excitingly new. Other tracks like "Wrong" and "So Low" can also be described in this way.
"Who Are You" is exactly what you'd want from a fun summer song that is also destined to be a club hit. Blare this one from your best speakers, with the bass turned way up.
