Back in 2004, the release of the now cult-classic Garden State
secured Zach Braff's place in America's heart and propelled The Shins to fame by their placement on the film's Grammy winning soundtrack. Ten years later, the actor and the indie rockers are reuniting for Wish I Was Here
, a Kickstarter-funded film written by Braff about a struggling actor, father and husband who is still trying to figure out who he is at the age of 35.
The Shins' song written for the film, "So Now What," which you can listen to now on NPR
, is complete with smooth synths and dreamlike guitar and evokes the lack of clarity and direction of the film's protagonist as it repeats "I guess we just begin again" throughout the track. Although it remains to be seen if Wish I Was Here
has the same movie magic that was achieved by Garden State
, this first song from it at least indicates that this compilation is likely to compete at the same level as other beloved soundtracks.
The soundtrack, which also contains music from Paul Simon, Bon Iver and The Head and the Heart, will be released on July 15, and you can pre-order it here
starting June 24.
