metric gets stadium love at terminal 5

Metric has established themselves as the kind of band that can do almost anything: bouncy dance anthems, scathing social commentary, and seriously touching moments - often in the same song. As any member of the sweaty and satisfied crowd streaming out of Terminal 5 and into this summer's persistent New York City rain this Wednesday could testify, the ability to completely own a live show sits prominently in that arsenal.

Emily Haines possessed the unique magic of being everywhere at once: playing keyboards, shaking a tambourine, tossing her flailing hair while cowgirl break-hopping, stalking around the stage like a lioness and singing out lyrics with a gleeful ferocity. Meanwhile, Josh Winstead exuded the kind of cool that most bassists can only hope to haplessly imitate, and guitarist James Shaw and drummer Joules Scott-Key expertly tore through every song, making it obvious that this was a full band and not just The Emily Haines Show.

The setlist was mostly devoted to new material: Metric infused Fantasies with the kind of explosive life the album often approaches but rarely quite hits on record. The band stormed through all but two tracks on Fantasies, and either everybody had already eaten up the new album or Haines' unhinged enthusiasm was just extremely contagious, because all the bouncing and fist-pumping threatened to burst the venue at the seams. By the time Haines announced "Stadium Love," the album and set closer about animals ripping each other apart gladiator-style while humans think they can just "watch and eat cheeseburgers," the crowd was swarming and screaming enough to give the beasties in the song a fair fight.

After chanting "I fought the war and the war won" on the "Monster Hospital" encore, the lucky denizens of the front row were rewarded by hugs and handshakes from Haines during an extended, poignant version of "Live it Out." If anyone had the idea that the quieter nature of certain tracks on Fantasies were indicative of the band going soft, Wednesday's show proved that Metric can still rock with the best of them.-Nina Mashurova
