It's a good day for artists like Chance the Rapper because streaming-only releases, like mixtapes, can now be nominated for - and win - Grammys.
In May, a petition was going around demanding that free projects - i.e. mixtapes - be made eligible for Grammy nomination by The Recording Academy
. "The eligibility guidelines have been revised to include recordings released via streaming platforms" announced by the Recording Academy yesterday (June 16th). These changes are effective immediately, meaning the new streaming-only releases are eligible for the 59th Grammy Awards.
The petition started because a man, Max Krasowitz, wanted rappers like Chance the Rapper to get the recognition they deserve. The new changes also mean that Chance's new mixtape, Coloring Book is fair game to win a Grammy. Well done, music community.
