Jamie xx, producer and member of The xx, has released his debut album In Colour, and last night he gave a riveting performance of his song Loud Places on Seth Meyers. The performance was hugely collaborative; Jamie xx was joined on stage by Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim, familiar faces to any xx fans, as well as Okay Kaya, Moses Sumney, Chairlift's Caroline Polachek, Savage's Jehnny Beth, Warpaint's Stella Mozgawa, and the Harlem Gospel Choir. The product is a highly energetic, dazzling performance with a touch of The xx's signature introversion in Croft's whispery yet firm vocals, which have only gotten stronger in live sets over the years.
The performance comes to a head in a great spinning mass of sound and movement with Jamie xx clearly at its core. While the song focuses on loneliness and solitude, Jamie xx's live performance counters that message with lively intimacy, creating a tone that is equal parts poignant and uplifting.
