Beach House Releases Old-School Video for 'Chariot'

Here's something you didn't expect to happen:

Beach House's song "Chariot," from the duo's upcoming B-Sides and Rarities, set to a montage of old footage of the Kennedys, Marilyn Monroe, and classic westerns. Yes, it's as dreamy as it sounds. In fact, it's enough to put you to sleep (in a really good way, of course). The song itself has been out for almost a month, but when you watch the video you'll be convinced that the two were meant to be experienced together (thanks to lyrics like "sunny day in their chariot/ were they waving back to you?" being sung over JFK's fateful ride).

But don't think that this is all without a purpose. The band's referred to the video as a "rumination on the creation, cultivation, and confusion of narratives in the media." Which is surprisingly relevant for our times, especially when you consider that "Chariot" was recorded during the Depression Cherry and Thank Your Lucky Stars sessions (two albums that were released in 2015, just two months apart and both to significant acclaim). Of course, this isn't a new issue, but now the song seems even more prescient.

The video is as spacey as the single, which works in typical Beach House style: slow-moving, synthy, and doused in reverb. It's like the synth-pop soundtrack to a slow dance in an 80s movie prom scene. You can expect a lot more of that on June 30th, when B-Sides and Rarities finally comes out. The band says that the compilation will contain "every song we have ever made that does not exist on one of our records." Also, don't dismiss this as a throwaway collection of songs that the duo didn't think were good enough to put on one of their albums. It's very important for Beach House's records to be cohesive works. The band's also stated that the songs on B-Sides and Rarities are not songs that they didn't like as much as the ones they've officially put out, but rather songs that they didn't feel had "a place on the records they were making."

So, in other words, be excited!
