Of the three Big Fish Theory
tracks released so far by Vince Staples
, this song is paramount. It begins with a triplet comprised bass, ornamented by Ty Dolla $ign's stolid vocals and off-beat percussion hits. It's confounding, especially as the two and four snare downbeats don't arrive until the end of the first minute. Supposedly, this song is the album's closing track.
The instrumental creates a mysterious aura, and Vince's opening bars contribute ("I'm the man, ten toes in the street, I'm the blood on the leaves, I'm the nose on the Sphnix). He continues on his usual repertoire of police violence, bloods vs. crips, and a hint of his love life.
The track closes with a consonant change in the instrumental and Ty Dolla's vocals, a strange, ambiguous direction for such a dystopia-like track. Vince Staples's Big Fish Theory
drops June 23rd. Check out the title track below.
