After a handful of cancelled shows including headlining sets at Sasquatch!, Hangout, and Primavera (in which Jamie xx
came to the rescue), Frank Ocean
took the stage in Aarhus, Denmark at the NorthSide Festival.
"Production delays" were the main cause for Frank's cancelled shows, but production and performance seemed to be a non-issue on Friday in Denmark. His set consisted mostly of Blonde
material, several songs from his Apple Music podcast, and just two Channel Orange
classics, "Thinkin Bout You" and "Pyramids."
So, will Mr. Ocean's tour continue without cancellations? Hopefully. His next show is not for another month, so production and preparation should not be an issue. Frank heads to London July 13th for Lovebox Festival, then he returns to LA for FYF Festival and NYC for Panorama. After that, he ships up to Canada and then Europe for his last two shows.
To be fair, his concert setup looked rather complex, with an abundance of live instrumentation (guitars, keyboards, percussion) and recordings. All of the performers on stage were equipped with headphones meaning that A. they truly cared about the quality of their performance and B. the material was not a cake walk.
Perhaps his new repertoire needed more rehearsal time, but I expect Frank's consistent cancellations to be a thing of the past, so we can hear more excerpts like these:
