Free NYC: 10 Can't-Miss Free Concerts (Part 1)

Living in New York City is expensive enough, and when it comes to summer night life, the prices of covers and tickets can skyrocket. But you can put your frugal self at ease as every summer this glorious city becomes home to a plethora of free events and concerts. As My Social List's up-to-date schedule will show you, there are actually more awesome concerts this year than any single person could ever attend (I dare you). So to lessen the clutter on your pocket planner (people still use those right?), we took it upon ourselves to handpick the most inviting free shows going down between today and the end of June. Of course we'll do a second round update of August and July, but you'll just have to wait.

Who: A Hawk and a Hacksaw
    When: 5/23 7:30pm
Where: Dave Rubenstein Atrium - Lincoln Center
Also: These guys are awesome and have a gypsy folk tone similar to that of Beirut. The band is led by accordionist Jeremy Barnes, who was previously the drummer for Neutral Milk Hotel.

    Who: Pick a Piper
    When: 5/28 11:00pm
    Where: Le Baron
Who's Payin': Red Bull Music Academy
Also: We've been following this collaborative project of Caribou drummer Brad Weber since late last year, and we're super stoked to see him participate in the Red Bull Academy.

Who: Fuzz (Ty Segall and Charlie Moothart)
    When: 6/6 7:00pm
    Where: Summerstage 2013 (Red Hook)
Also: This is one of Ty Segall's many projects and its guitars sear through Sabbath-like slow grinds.

Who: The Walkmen, Phosphorescent, and more
    When: 6/15 3:00pm
    Where: McCarren Park
    Who's Payin': Northside Festival
Also: If you listen to Phosphorescent's latest album Muchacho, we're sure we'll see you there.

    Who: The Airborne Toxic Event
    When: 6/18 7:00pm
    Where: Summerstage 2013 (Central Park)
Also: We just met this group at our Festival Fever Session set up outside Coachella, so we know first-hand how these guys sound under a hot summer sun.

    Who: Unknown Mortal Orchestra
    When: 6/28 7:00pm
    Where: South Street Seaport
    Who's Payin': Seaport Music Festival
Also: We're confident in our assessment that UMO are the perfect band for outdoor boozing. We also wouldn't be surprised if the brood of babes in the video below showed up, and maybe even Fogel (wishful thinking).

Who: Kurt Vile, Parquet Courts, Marnie Stern, and more
    When: 6/29 1:00pm
    Where: South Street Seaport
Also: Because it's free, and it's Kurt Vile.
